In New Jersey, you can incur a $500 fine and an additional 6 months' suspension of your license if convicted of driving under a suspended license. The court may order community service or you may even face jail time (customarily, on your third offense). There are few exceptions to this rule. Generally, you won't face additional sanctions if your license was suspended for non-payment of parking tickets or as a result of faulty notice of suspension by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
